Fern slipped her favourite red dress over her head. It was a charity shop purchase and had cost her two pounds fifty. It was a lovely cotton dress with tiny sequins across the chest and thin spaghetti straps, she felt so pretty in it. When she spent most of her days in dungarees as she painted, it was nice to wear something a bit more feminine. She gave her eyes a flick of sparkly rose-gold eyeshadow and swept her favourite candyfloss lip balm across her lips. She pulled her hair up into a knot and threw her feet into her gold sandals.

Despite the fact that she and Fletcher had been dating for a few weeks now, she always felt the flutter of excitement at seeing him as if they were going out on a first date.

She went downstairs and poured herself a glass of apple juice, smiling at Bones lying upside down fast asleep on the sofa. She walked past him and went and stood out on the decking, looking out over the spectacular view.

She loved her little beach hut and living here had meant that she’d been able to save a small amount towards a deposit on a house. Maybe that house would be one she’d be sharing with Fletcher at some point in the future, although with the possibility of a proposal on the horizon it could be sooner than she’d thought.

She knew it was silly to get carried away with the proposal idea when it was so soon into their relationship. But if he did propose it would be the delicious cherry on top of their perfect relationship. Maybe she could put the feelers out tonight, find out what he thought about their future. Then she could either put this idea to bed or allow herself to get excited about it.

She finished her drink and whistled for Bones. Suddenly she was looking forward to seeing Fletcher even more.
